Evaluation of the Apps.
1. Bug Brain ED Reading Level 1
In order to access this app, I went and searched Phonics Apps on my Ipad. This app allows your student(s) to segment words, to blend sounds and vowels, and allows the students to check their work. This app speaks to the students and segments words for students to hear the students then move the bug onto the word that has just been spoken and segmented for them. This app also contains a button for parents and teachers; this button presents parents and teachers with more information about literacy and the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. A weakness of this app is the consistency that you receive when segmenting words. At first you get a picture of the word you will be segmenting, and then the picture goes away and you have to rely on the sound of the word in order to segment it.
2. Phonics 1st
In order to access this app, I went and searched Phonics Apps on my Ipad. This app allows you to choose exercises from: words, spelling, writing, sentences, matching, riddles, search, and review. This app also allows you to decide which skills you'd like to work on with your student(s). You can choose to work on the following categories: short a, e, i, o, u, long a, i, o, u, blend with s and l with your student(s). This app will read the words aloud to the student(s) for them to hear. The students can also check their work with this app as they progress though the app. Each exercise and category has 19 words in which the students can work on. A weakness of this app is the limited choices of categories that you can select from before you have to purchase the app.
3. Teach Words
In order to access this app, I went and searched Phonics Apps on my Ipad. This app allows you to learn how words are constructed in this word building game. There are different levels within this game. In the first level you have to construct three letter words. In the second level you have to construct four letter words. In the third level you have to construct five letter words. In the fourth level you have to construct six letter words. Within the levels you have to search for the letters within the puzzle and then select the letters that makeup the word. A weakness of this app is the limited number of words you can do on each level before you have to purchase the app.
4. Play Words LT
In order to access this app, I went and searched Phonics Apps on my Ipad. This app allows student(s) to play picture blast, word match, and lost letters. In picture blast, a picture is given and the student(s) says the name of the picture given. The student can check their response by clicking answers. In word match, the app gives you the picture and the name of the picture, the student has to find the word of the picture and click it. In lost letter the student(s) has to identify the missing letter and select the missing letter. A weakness of this app is the age/skill level of some of the words within the app. Some of the words within the app maybe too hard for some student's levels.
5. Hooked Phonics
In order to access this app, I went and searched Phonics Apps on my Ipad. This app allows students(s) to listen to the sound(s) of the letters. The student(s) can then do activities that are based around the letters. They can build words with the initial beginning sounds of letters. One weakness of this app is the limited choices that are provided for students to use. The app limits what the students can and can't do because the app is free. If you purchase different parts of the app you can work on different concepts and skills with your student(s).
6. ABC Tracer
In order to access this app, I went and searched Phonics Apps on my Ipad. This app allows student(s) to; trace the outlines of letters (both upper and lower case), trace numbers, listen to the ABC song (in both phonetic and normal sounds), pop the balloons in alphabetic order, trace the outline of words, paint pictures of the word that is illustrated, and take a quiz. One weakness of this app is the app can be overwhelming to students who are completing this on their own.
