Vocabulary Development Assessments
One way to assess your students' vocabulary development abilities is to offer an informal assessment of the student's oral vocabulary. You can assess the students' oral vocabulary through the use of the zip test. The zip test can be used for assessment as well as instruction. In the zip test the words chosen for deletion are masked with blank labels. The readers attempt to supply the word that is masked, and then "zip" off the label to receive immediate feedback. This allows the teacher(s) to assess students' vocabulary and students to continue reading with a sense of understanding.
An example of a zip test is:
The boy _________ on the trampoline.
