Chasing Lincoln's Killer: The Search for John Wilkes Booth By James L. Swanson is a book that can be used for an interactive read aloud lesson that develops vocabulary and comprehension with questions. Within the book a day-by-day account of the wild chase to find John Wilkes Booth is discussed, and how the death of Abraham Lincoln impacted the nation. Through out the reading the students willl encounter new vocabulary terms that are specifically reated to history content. While completing the reading, the teacher can ask students a variety of questions based on their prior knowledge and the reading they've completed.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Koningsburg is about a twelve-year old named Claudia Kincaid who is ready for a big change in her life. She is ready to run away from her home, but instead of running from somewhere, she decides to run to somewhere, some place comfortable, and preferably beautiful. Throughout the reading you can ask your students comprehension questions based upon the text, and questions that require higher level thinking.
Low Level and High Interest
Storm Warriors by Elisa Carbone, is a book that is at the sixth grade level and has an interest level of grades sixth through eighth. This book is set in the year of 1895, and Nathan Williams is driven out of his home by the Ku Klux Klan and he is still reeling from the death of his mother. Nathan moves to Pea Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to start a new life with his father and grandfather.

Othello by Julius Lester, is a book that is at the sixth grade level and has an interest level of grades seventh through ninth. Julius Lester "re-conceptualizes" one of Shakespeare's best-known plays, giving readers a fresh look at its complex themes of race, love, friendship, and jealousy.
