Word Identification Assessments
One way to assess your students' word identification abilities is to assess the student's visual analysis. You can assess the students' visual analysis through the use of onset and rime. One informal way to assess the readers' ability to analyze monosyllabic word parts is to give the students' a list of words that highlight onset and rime. The teacher will pronounce either the onset or rime of each word, and allow five seconds for students to circle the word part you pronounced. While implementing this assessment, be sure to pronounce the onset or rime of each word, be sure not to create a pattern of all onset, all rime, or every other word of onset or rime.
